Building a Tribal Extension Program with Community Engagement: A Case Study
Casey, Hallie
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v30 n3 Spr 2019
The Navajo Technical University (NTU) Land grant Program has been building community focused horticultural extension for the past five years. The long-term goals are to develop an extension program that will serve as a hub of Navajo and Native-specific agricultural information and conversation, build individual and community capacity, support individual growers' efforts, collaborate with other organizations, and develop an extension and capacity-focused network throughout the Southwest. An ancillary objective is building community trust and name recognition. All of these activities are based out of NTU's Crownpoint campus, located in the Navajo Nation. Out of a population of 174,692, 36.9% of all families on the Navajo reservation live below the poverty line (U.S. Census, 2016). NTU is a tribally controlled university that serves the Navajo Nation and the greater Four Corners region. The primary activities to support the Program have been three-fold: an advanced garden training and mentorship program; garden workshops open to the public; and involvement in local elementary, middle, and high schools.
