WCPSS School Psychology Mentor Program: A Game Changer
Nagy, Charlotte
Communique, v47 n4 p1, 21-22 Dec 2018
The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS; North Carolina) school psychology department is proud to have had a strong mentoring program since the 1990s. Dr. Carol Rahmani, lead psychologist at the time, wanted to build a program of support that was similar to one implemented by the school counselors. Dr. Rahmani recognized the value of supervision and sources of support that are not evaluative. She partnered with seasoned school psychologist Ms. Drue Hodges to build a program to provide mentors to school psychologists as they started their careers in WCPSS. Recognizing the need for support with the joys and challenges of being a school psychologist, several staff members embraced the beginning of the WCPSS School Psychology Mentor Program as mentors. The program was immediately successful and several founding mentors and former WCPSS school psychologists had the opportunity to present at the 2001 NASP convention in Washington, DC. The success of the Mentor Program continues today. The WCPSS mentee/mentor program is a game changer for recruiting and retaining high quality school psychologists in the 15th largest school district in the country. Within the large system, the mentee programming allows for a personal touch-point to orient new staff to professional learning and the systems and structures. The program is an all-around win-win because it offers well-rounded support for new hires and experiential growth for mentors.
