In this article Allan Rossman shares a conversation with Nicholas Horton, Beitzel Professor of Technology and Society and Professor of Statistics and Data Science at Amherst College. Horton is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Some topics of discussion included where Beitzel attended college and his major, how he was first introduced to statistics by taking a woodworking class that eventually led to a career in statistics, and development of his interest in teaching. He also discusses his work chairing the committee that revised guidelines for undergraduate programs in statistical sciences, the process, his motivation for the formation of the committee and how he became involved in conducting the work of the committee. The article concludes with Horton offering his advice to those new to statistics education.
