Web-Based Support for Teachers of Students with Pediatric Illness: The EdMedKids Project

Communique, v42 n2 p16, 18 Oct 2013
Approximately 12% of U.S. school children are affected by chronic illness, with asthma and diabetes as the most common. Many of these illnesses threaten school success and represent a challenge for teachers. How best to minimize the negative effects of these illnesses in school remains unclear. In part, the subspecialty of pediatric school psychology was formulated nearly 20 years ago to help schools meet the challenges of educating students with chronic illnesses. Tools available to pediatric school psychologists for this purpose, however, are limited, and some of them are not widely known among practicing school psychologists. Moreover, prearranged and organized pediatric eHealth interventions exist, but those that psychologists can use to support teachers may be nonexistent, not easily accessed, or not constructed to meet educators' needs. In light of these facts, the authors prepared a pilot version of a teacher-friendly website (entitled EdMedKids) designed to help school psychologists in their endeavor to disseminate important and supportive information to teachers who are instructing students with chronic illnesses. This article describes the EdMedKids project and how it can be used by practicing school psychologists.
