Using NSSE Data to Analyze Levels of Engagement of Distance Learners
Morris, Pamela Duke; Clark, Linda M.
Quarterly Review of Distance Education, v19 n2 p1-13 2018
This article looks at the National Survey of Student Engagement, NSSE, to understand more about the differences between distance learners and the other more traditional learners. It also looks at freshmen as compared to seniors. Distance learning allows students opportunities for postsecondary education, opportunities that many would not otherwise have (Chen, Gonyea, & Kuh, 2008). This study finds that the student engagement in student-faculty interactions was lower for distance learners. This study also finds that distance learners tend to spend more time working full time or caring for dependents, which supports the findings of Fiorini, Liu, Shepard, and Ouimet (2014) that distance learners tend to have a longer time to graduation than other learners.
