Documentation as an Integral Part of Teaching: Early Childhood Teachers' Systematic Search for Good Teaching
Kang, Jinju; Walsh, Daniel J.
Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, v39 n4 p262-277 2018
People have long recorded their everyday lives. In prehistoric times, people drew and painted on the walls of caves (Bahn, 2012; Clottes, 2010). With the invention of writing came written records. Today people document their lives, for example, with video recorders and smart phones. We report on a study of three early childhood teachers and their efforts at pedagogical documentation. We build on Bruner's (1996) notion of "externalization." Bruner argues that mental work should be "externalized," to produce "a record of our mental efforts, one that is 'outside us' rather than vaguely 'in memory'" (p. 23). Externalization enables people to share and to think about their own thoughts. When teachers, children, and parents collaborate to externalize children's mental work, children are able to see and share with others the fruits of their mental labors.
