Two Best Practices from Portugal
Van Driel, Barry
Intercultural Education, v29 n5-6 p624-626 2018
This article examines two best practices of intercultural education in Portugal. The Intercultural School Seal in Portugal aims to identify schools that stand out in their promotion of projects that recognise and appreciate diversity as an opportunity and source of learning for all. This initiative comprises a contribution to the work of the school in the personal and social instruction and training of children, youth and adults, as well as in active citizenship. Rede de Escolas para a Educação Intercultural (REEI) Network of Schools for Intercultural Education is a joint initiative of the High Commission for Migration (ACM), of the Ministry of Education, through the Directorate-General for Education (DGE), and the Aga Khan Foundation Portugal (AKF Portugal). This program aims to: (1) promote interculturalism, welcoming, integration and educational success of all children and young people aged 6-18; (2) foster respect for differences and establishing positive interactions among school students; and (3) promote the approach among all members of the educational community.
