"We All Walked through [It] Together": Reflections on the Pulse Nightclub Shooting
Shields, Sara Scott
Art Education, v70 n4 p23-28 2017
The purpose of this article is to reflect on the events that occurred at Pulse nightclub and how a social justice camp collided to create opportunities for campers, preservice teachers, and faculty mentors to use creative activities to connect community members during a time of tragedy. The author begins with a brief introduction to critical pedagogy and social justice art education, followed by an overview of how they developed the art and social justice summer camp. Next the author reflects on how this event changed the course of the camp experience and, in closing, offers recommendations for other art educators interested in creating authentic environments for preservice students and teachers to work toward creative expression about difficult and uncomfortable topics. The author uses this article to remind art educators of their responsibility to create opportunities for dialoging about the uncomfortable. The arts provide openings for wrestling with issues of justice and humanity. Through the interweaving of connection, concept, and conversation, the social justice camp gave preservice teachers and campers the opportunity to meaningfully engage in difficult conversations.
