Using the Behavior Expectation Discrepancy Tool to Support Young Children with Challenging Behaviors
Riggleman, Samantha; Morgan, Joseph John
Young Exceptional Children, v21 n4 p228-237 Dec 2018
The Behavior Expectation Discrepancy Tool (B-EDT) was designed to help early childhood teachers identify critical behavioral expectations within their classroom environments and possible problem behaviors that may impact a child's access to the environment. The tool allows them to determine if there is a behavioral problem when compared with children who are typically developing and target interventions to help mitigate the impact of these problems in the preschool environment. This article focuses on using the B-EDT to determine: (1) typical behavioral expectations of young children within the early childhood setting; (2) discrepancies between typical expectations and exhibited behaviors that may cause children difficulty in accessing the environment; and (3) specific characteristics of behavioral problem as seen across a variety of settings. A study of early childhood teachers using the B-EDT indicates that teachers consider the tool user-friendly, specific, and easy to understand. The article recommends that introduction of this tool be carefully paired with explicit instruction about developmentally appropriate behaviors in early childhood environments.
