Helping Homeless, Foster Care, and Juvenile Justice Students
Gross, Jaclyn; Mann, Angela; Bluez, Grai; Sulkowski, Michael L.
Communique, v45 n5 p1, 30-32 Jan-Feb 2017
Not all students are dealt the same cards in life and some seem to have the deck stacked against them. Those who are dealt a particularly difficult hand to play include homeless, foster care, and juvenile justice students. As professionals who often know the most about mental health, service delivery, interdisciplinary collaboration, and crisis response in school settings, school psychologists can have an integral role in supporting homeless, foster care, and juvenile justice students. With this in mind, this article first provides information on different groups of these students and the plight they face. The remainder of the article presents crosscutting issues that impact this population and suggests ways to address residential instability, school dropout and underachievement, mental health problems, exposure to traumatic experiences, and highly elevated suicide risk as they pertain to the aforementioned student populations.
