Consultee-Centered Consultation in Contemporary Schools
Newman, Daniel; Ingraham, Colette; Shriberg, David
Communique, v42 n6 p14-17 Mar-Apr 2014
The consultant role remains a critical function for school psychologists and other educators, and a number of choices exist regarding how to enact the role. Preservice training, assumptions and beliefs regarding practice, and work context all influence professional practices; so may contribute to misunderstandings about particular approaches. In this article, key features of Consultee-Centered Consultation (CCC) have been highlighted in order to demonstrate the relevance of CCC in the current educational climate. CCC principles have much to offer school-based practitioners. In particular, CCC focuses attention on processes such as interpersonal communication and relationship-building, interpersonal practices that at times get lost in contemporary practice. It is these processes that establish the conditions for effective problem solving, consultee growth, and student success.
