RU OK: Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Gatekeeper Training Program
Adams, Lavonne M.; Nguyen, Trung; Morgan, Karen Bell; Gumbleton, Cortney
Journal of College Student Development, v59 n5 p614-617 Sep-Oct 2018
In response to growing concern over students' self-reported lack of emotional well-being, heightened by the loss of several students to suicide within a short period of time, the authors' institution committed to expanding suicide prevention and awareness efforts by creating a comprehensive program entitled "RU OK." One key feature of the program included providing Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training to students, faculty, and staff. To target efforts toward first-year students, the First Year Experience (FYE) staff of Student Development Services (SDS) required all FYE student leaders to complete QPR training provided by the Counseling and Mental Health Center beginning in 2013. This included student leaders involved with Frog Camp (an extended orientation), Frogs First (a 4-day welcoming event prior to the first day of class), and Connections (a 6-week leadership program specifically designed for first-year students). After 3 years of requiring QPR training for all FYE student leaders, SDS needed to assess its effectiveness and determine whether it should continue or be modified. In collaboration with a faculty member from one of the academic colleges, SDS undertook an assessment approved by university IRB during 2016 to determine if QPR gatekeeper training can improve self-described knowledge, competency, and self-efficacy about intervening with suicidal individuals.
