Late-Night Alcohol-Free Programming and Implications for Alcohol Prevention among College Students: An Application of the McMOS Model

The adverse effects of heavy alcohol consumption on the health and development of college students is a major concern in the United States. An exploratory evaluative process was undertaken at a university in the southeastern United States to assess stages of alcohol acquisition and modification among students who attended late-night programming and a comparison group. Using the Multi-component Motivational Stages Model (McMOS), students were assessed in order to better match prevention strategies and content to identify student's aggregate level of risk for alcohol use. A total of 1,174 surveys were collected during a fall semester among a convenience sample of students. Of those surveyed, 207 students had not attended a Late Night Program (LNP). Findings suggest that there is a positive association between student attendance at late night programs and lower levels of alcohol use (p < 0.001) Respondents who attended an LNP also reported lower levels of binge drinking (p = 0.002). Students who did not attend an LNP reported greater proportions of alcohol use acquisition and lower levels of readiness to stop or limit drinking behaviors (p < 0.001). Although LNP events are attended by non-drinkers and drinkers alike, efforts must be enhanced to target higher-risk drinkers to attend latenight programming. The lower consumption of alcohol among LNP attendees suggest alcohol-free programming should be considered as a mechanism for deterring high-risk alcohol use on college campuses.
