LGBT Bullying in School: Perspectives on Prevention. Wicked Problems Forum: LGBT Bullying in K-12 Education
Goodboy, Alan K.; Martin, Matthew M.
Communication Education, v67 n4 p513-520 2018
In this stimulus essay on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) bullying in schools, the authors begin by describing assumptions and everyday reality that guide their orientation to this problem. They then turn to two recent surveys to explore the prevalence and meaning of bullying for LGBT youth as it pertains to issues of relational communication and LGBT identities, primarily the identities of victimized persons. The goal of the essay is to convey these ideas in ways that shine a light on the corrosive nature of bullying as it pertains to LGBT students' ability to freely relate, be themselves, and flourish in school.
