Making Happiness and Health a Priority
Bruce-Davis, Micah N.
Parenting for High Potential, v6 n1 p8-10 Dec 2016
There are many ways families can incorporate well-being practices into family life. Concerns over grades, getting homework completed, and managing busy schedules can be overwhelming for parents and children. In addition to making plans for their child's educational goals, parents should consider setting well-being goals to create a happy and healthy family. Ultimately, the key for success is to make well-being practices a priority and family habit. Even by taking small steps, such as designating a weekly "no-electronics/spend-time-in-nature" day, starting each day with a short meditation practice, or instituting a family game night, parents can help children develop not only their academic skills and talents, but also their whole being. A sidebar discusses how to incorporate eight ways of well-being into family through: (1) exercise; (2) nutrition and diet; (3) time in nature; (4) interpersonal relationships; (5) recreation and enjoyable activities; (6) relaxation and stress management; (7) religious and spiritual involvement; and (8) contribution and service.
