Missing School Matters
Balfanz, Robert
Phi Delta Kappan, v98 n2 p8-13 Oct 2016
Results of a survey conducted by the Office for Civil Rights show that 6 million public school students (13%) are not attending school regularly. Chronic absenteeism--defined as missing more than 10% of school for any reason--has been negatively linked to many key academic outcomes. Evidence shows that students who exit chronic absentee status can get back on track. One of the most effective strategies for closing the achievement gap will be a concerted effort to ensure that high-poverty students attend school regularly from preK through 12th grade. Programs like Diplomas Now, Challenge 5: Strive for Fewer than Five Days Absent, and My Brother's Keeper Success Mentor Initiative are showing success in reducing chronic absenteeism.
