The excellent paper by Goldhammer (this issue) deals with a most relevant and very pervasive problem of ability assessment: the evaluation of performance by considering speed and accuracy of performance. Goldhammer proposes item-level time limits as a possible remedy for individual differences in the speed-accuracy trade-off (SATO) to keep time pressure during testing comparable across participants and items. The authors of this article comment that, overall, they greatly appreciate the sophisticated approach toward one of the trickiest issues in adequately evaluating performance in ability and achievement measures. This article comments on a few conceptual and pragmatic challenges of the proposal put forward by Goldhammer.
