NCTM's "Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All" (2014), outlines eight teaching practices for effective teaching and learning mathematics. One of them, facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse, states, "Effective teaching of mathematics facilitates discourse among students to build shared understanding of mathematical ideas by analyzing and comparing student approaches and arguments." (p. 10) This issue's problem scenario involves facilitation of the whole-class discussion, during which students share their solutions and ideas. This is a critical component of the task implementation so that students are able to further develop and solidify their understanding of the underlying geometric concepts. This task is accessible to students at various van Hiele levels of geometric thinking.
