Next Steps at the University of Zambia in Implementing ESD
Namafe, Charles M.
Applied Environmental Education and Communication, v14 n2 p121-125 2015
By acting within a comfort zone formed by, first, its own institutional location and, second, the subsector of teacher education, the University of Zambia can be said to be succeeding in mainstreaming Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Environmental Education (EE). This article provides outline activities and lessons learnt along the way of mainstreaming ESD and EE. Telling stories of mainstreaming ESD and EE by key change agents within institutions could have immense positive effects, especially if such story telling which shows models of effective mainstreaming is championed by renowned international visitors such as the Chair and Secretariat of the International Network of Teacher Education Institutions associated with the UNESCO Chair on Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability. The article gives one illustration of this point. It also describes signposts for next steps at the University of Zambia formed by attempts to go beyond the comfort zones of institutional location and teacher education.
