Mini Anchors: A Universal Design for Learning Approach
Zydney, Janet Mannheimer; Hasselbring, Ted S.
TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, v58 n6 p21-28 Nov 2014
Teachers are challenged to create flexible learning environments that prepare students with diverse learning needs for adaptable thinking in a fast-paced and changing society. To address this need, we used a design-based research approach to develop a technology-based solution to individualize mathematical problem solving instruction to students based on their learning needs. We iteratively tested and refined the design with over 130 students as well as their teachers, parents, and content experts. In the end, we created a new instructional model called mini anchors, a prescription for how to individualize instruction by embedding numerous, short, video-based scenarios within a computer-based program to provide learners with multiple ways to perceive, engage with, and interact with the content. This instructional model may be a valuable approach to us
