Engaging with Schools: National Family Resource Centers
Dewey, Eric; Mitchell, Erica
Reclaiming Children and Youth, v23 n2 p31-34 Sum 2014
More than one in four children in Tennessee live in poverty, and in Nashville the number creeps higher to one in three (Kids Count Data Center, 2012). Nearly three out of every four children in Metro Nashville Public Schools qualify for free and reduced lunch and are considered at risk (Tennessee Department of Education, 2013). This concentration of poverty in schools has bred a new type of hurdle that is more social-emotional in nature than purely academic. What teachers and administrators have found--and what seems obvious--is that children learn best when they have the foundational social emotional support from which to launch. Family Resource Centers were created to address the social-emotional needs associated with living in high levels of poverty. They address care for the whole child as well as the child's family. As the city of Nashville continues to thrive economically and top "best in class" lists, Family Resource Centers are positioned to help the city's most vulnerable be an integral part of the city's renewed vitality. This article describes the rich array of resources the Centers provide to meet the holistic needs of these impoverished families and children.
