One of the challenges for undergraduate students is to comprehend abstract and theoretical concepts in communication classes. Given today's college students' expectations for in-class interaction (Rocca, 2010), it is important that instructors integrate hands-on activities in their lesson plans while teaching theoretical concepts. Research shows that certain learning techniques help students gain a better understanding of theoretical models. For instance, a study on cooperative learning reports that when students are given opportunities to interact with each other to complete an interdependent task, they improve both socially and educationally (Johnson & Johnson, 2009). Similarly, active learning activities enhance student learning and comprehension of course concepts. When students participate in applying the tools and techniques through a hands-on activity, their knowledge of the concepts increases (Mitchell, Avery, Prater, & Swafford, 2013). The objective of the activity described in this article is to teach students how to identify various cultural markers of an organizational culture using Schein's Model of Organizational Culture as a heuristic. Groups consist of four or five students depending on the class size. The group assignment is based on the proximity of students from one another to make the activity logistically feasible. The seating is arranged in a way that group members can face one another and work cooperatively on the task. Procedures for this activity are outlined.
