Social Justice and Faith Maturity: Exploring Whether Religious Beliefs Impact Civic Engagement
Kozlowski, Christine; Ferrari, Joseph R.; Odahl, Charlynn
Education, v134 n4 p427-432 Sum 2014
The current study compared perceptions by college students (n = 304; M age=19.75 years old) enrolled at an urban and diverse Roman Catholic university on self-report measures of faith/belief structures, social justice, and community service attitudes. Survey results indicated that both horizontal and vertical faith maturity perceptions significantly predicted students' social justice and faith and civic engagement perceptions. Results offer insights into influences on students' spiritual development as related to their participation in social justice and civic engagement activities. Outcome may be of interest to researchers and educators assessing the role of civic service on student development. Limitations and future directions for research are discussed.
