Analyzing Collision Processes with the Smartphone Acceleration Sensor
Vogt, Patrik; Kuhn, Jochen
Physics Teacher, v52 n2 p118-119 Feb 2014
It has been illustrated several times how the built-in acceleration sensors of smartphones can be used gainfully for quantitative experiments in school and university settings (see the overview in Ref. 1 ). The physical issues in that case are manifold and apply, for example, to free fall, radial acceleration, several pendula, or the exploitation of everyday contexts. This paper supplements these applications and presents an experiment to study elastic and inelastic collisions. In addition to the masses of the two impact partners, their velocities before and after the collision are of importance, and these velocities can be determined by numerical integration of the measured acceleration profile.
