Two Wheels Squared: Taking Students on a Journey via Experiential Learning
Ferek, Cindy
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v85 n3 p16-20 2014
This article shows how a high school physical education teacher was able to build a curriculum that blends driver education, bicycling skills, and fitness through experiential learning. The article describes the process of developing and gaining administrative support for the curriculum, including acquiring the funding necessary via grants to purchase bicycles, helmets, air compressors, basic repair tools, and replacement parts. In addition, students' reactions to the program, both initially and after several years of implementation, will be discussed, as well as the eventual institutionalization of the bicycle curriculum in the other high schools throughout our division. The author also shares how she met various challenges and continues to advocate for physical activity that is applicable and relevant to students' lives.
