At the 2013 Annual Conference of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME), Dr. Carl Grant was invited to deliver the Rose Duhon Sells Lecture. He presented a history on the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME). The initial vision of multicultural education was created and carried out by several scholars, who are now members of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME). They contributed to the discourses against racist, sexist, classist, homophobic, and ableist approaches in schools and society. In practically all spheres of society, multiculturalism is becoming a way of thinking, and members of NAME are often the scholars of multiculturalism--communicating a social justice-oriented way of thinking and acting. Acquiring the wisdom to understand people and the places they live has been an ongoing challenge for centuries. Besides influencing curriculum design and development, multicultural education scholars brought about a deep historical and philosophical interrogation of the systems of oppression in preK-college education. Scholars, some of whom were members of NAME, participated in this interrogation and were integral to the shift in the education policy and practice toward social justice. Arguably, it was through the efforts of early scholars who attended NAME and the opportunities that were present during those times and conditions in the United States that NAME promised to become the organization that gave major voice to multiculturalism and multicultural education. Dr. Carl Grant concluded his speech with an offer for a new Action Plan for NAME.
