Digital Expressions and Networks Shape Intercultural Opportunities for Youth
Corriero, Jennifer; O'Doherty, Liam
Intercultural Education, v24 n5 p493-497 2013
The world needs young people with hope, vision, empathy and the ability to transform ideals into reality. As economies, societies, and geopolitical environments become more globally interconnected, youth are faced with a more complex world where intercultural communication skills and experiences are emerging as essential elements for addressing global challenges. New technologies have given rise to social networks for social change. For over a decade, TakingITGlobal (TIG), a non-profit organization, has been pioneering the facilitation of cross-cultural dialogue and understanding among youth through technology. This has led to the development of TIG (TIGweb.org), a thriving online community, available in 13 languages. Its aim is to inspire, inform and involve a membership of over 440,000 from every country in the world and has reached 20 million people since launching in 1999. To better understand the intercultural experiences of the members of the site, the authors conducted interviews with three youth from the network: Kekeshan Basu, a 12-year-old from United Arab Emirates, Shobana Nair a 21-year-old from Malaysia, and Paolo Ricciardelli a 28-year-old from Italy. A summary of these interviews is presented in this article.
