Vision + Community = Outdoor Learning Stations
Eick, Charles; Tatarchuk, Shawna; Anderson, Amy
Science and Children, v50 n7 p61-67 Mar 2013
Outdoor learning areas are becoming more popular as a means for community-based, cross-curricular learning where children study issues of local relevance (Sobel 2004). Outdoor learning areas, any place outside of the school building where children can observe and interact with the natural world around them, include outdoor structures for seating as well as nearby fields, courtyards, woods, and streams. Getting children "outside" to learn and to experience nature has become a national priority because of the many potential benefits being outdoors provides for children (Louv 2005). Research on children's learning supports the use of these environments for connected experiences leading to greater achievement in science and in reading (Eick 2012). The key to success is starting with a well-informed plan for developing and using the outdoor areas over time. This article describes how three teachers with an interest in using nature and the outdoors in science studies got together to talk about their ideas for the development of their school's outdoor areas and leveraged community partners to transform outdoor areas at their school into outdoor learning stations.
