Choose Your Own Adventure: Examining Social Exchange Theory and Relational Choices
Ribarsky, Elizabeth
Communication Teacher, v27 n1 p29-32 2013
To many students, theory can be confusing and difficult to retain. Therefore, instructors who put emphasis on theory in their courses and lectures must find new ways for students to connect to the sometimes obscure material. Through a hands-on approach to learning theory, students may be challenged to examine their own beliefs and knowledge (Demulder & Eby, 1999). Ultimately, "engagement in learning involves formulating a deeper connection between the student and the material whereby a student develops an interest in the topic or retains learning beyond the short term" (Schussler, 2009, pp. 115-116). To foster this form of engagement, this teaching activity encourages students to employ a pragmatic decision-making process of "choosing their own adventure" to examine how people make relational choices in light of social exchange theory. A list of references and suggested readings is included.
