Multiplicity and Self-Identity: Trauma and Integration in Shirley Mason's Art
Thompson, Geoffrey
Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, v28 n1 p39-42 2011
This viewpoint appeared in its original form as the catalogue essay that accompanied the exhibition "Multiplicity and Self-Identity: Trauma and Integration in Shirley Mason's Art," curated by the author for Gallery 2110, Sacramento, CA, and the 2010 Annual Conference of the American Art Therapy Association. The exhibition featured 17 artworks by Shirley Mason (also known as "Sybil"), an artist and trauma victim whose intense struggle with dissociative states informed all aspects of her life, including her art. This viewpoint discusses aspects of the artist's artwork as situated in the larger context of the relationship that art has to trauma and to art's potential for holding together multiple realities.
