An Economic Analysis of the External Constraints on Reform of the Higher Education Admissions System in China
Pu, Jinfeng
Chinese Education and Society, v46 n1 p51-63 Jan-Feb 2013
From the perspective of an economic analysis of the intertwined role of the educational opportunities market and the educational products market, I believe that the unified entrance exam system currently in effect in China has, in reality, assumed the role of maintaining a price ceiling for opportunities in higher education. If we abolish the entrance exam selection system and completely replace it with market mechanisms, given China's present circumstances--that is, an unsound legal system, unbalanced economic development, and rampant corruption--this will inevitably cause the cost of higher education to rise, which is not only disadvantageous toward the development of low-income families and disadvantaged groups but also toward the fairness and impartiality of society as a whole. We will only be able to perfect the process of reforming the higher education admissions system by perfecting the employment market and increasing what education has to offer.
