Quick turnover among chief advancement officers or development leaders is no longer a rare occurrence. Recruitment executives report that half or more of the searches they are conducting result from vacancies caused by vice presidents being asked to resign. And those terminations are not because of fundraising failures. Vice presidential requirements have evolved and broadened to reflect the current educational landscape. With the added responsibilities, the chief development officer has become a more prominent member of the president's team and is in a position that entails more than fundraising. A vice president's tenure can get off to a bad start before his or her first day on the job. Good chemistry between the president and the vice president of advancement is critical. Candidates can head off problems by carefully assessing their fit with the institution's mission, culture, and leadership.
