The Practical Enactment of Adventure Learning: Where Will You AL@?
Miller, Brant G.; Hougham, R. Justin; Eitel, Karla Bradley
TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, v57 n4 p28-33 May 2013
The Adventure Learning (AL) approach to designing and implementing learning experiences has great potential for practitioners. This manuscript delineates the practical enactment of AL to support the K-12 community, teacher educators, and residential environmental science program providers in the conceptualization and delivery of their own AL expeditions. AL@ is the coupling of the AL approach and place-based education principles. AL@ highlights connections and relationships to place that empower students and teachers to explore the question, "where will you AL@?" This manuscript shares valuable lessons learned as a result of multiple AL pilot expeditions that highlight local spaces. In addition, next steps are explored that further situate the AL@ approach into existing curricular structures.
