Project Impact: Service-Learning's Impact on Youth with Disabilities
Miller, Christina R.
School Social Work Journal, v37 n2 p52-75 Mar 2013
A qualitative exploration of a service-learning program for high school students with disabilities is presented. Focus groups with (n = 15) students and interviews with (n = 3) service-learning teachers at multiple service-learning sites were conducted to explore the perceptions of students and service-learning teachers regarding the impact of the service-learning experience on students' personal and social lives as well as on their plans for life after high school. Focus group participants identified the following nine themes: fun/enjoyment, personal change, future benefits, improved reputation, met a community need/helped someone, future service plans, project improvements, negative service-learning outcome, and service requirement. Service-learning teachers identified seven themes: fun/enjoyment, more service, learning, working through challenges/frustration, understanding relationships, and good feeling. The paper concludes with a discussion of the role of school social workers in advocating for and participating in service-learning programs for students with disabilities. (Contains 3 tables.)
