Preparing Parents to Advocate for a Child with Autism
Foster, Anne; Rude, Debbie; Grannan, Caroline
Phi Delta Kappan, v94 n4 p16-20 Dec 2012
For parents living with children diagnosed with autism, advocating for their child presents a new reality in parenthood, often unexpected and with more questions than answers. Once they have passed the various stages of denial and sadness, questioned the experts, and finally accepted the reality of the challenges their child will face, it is time to get busy. Time is of the essence, and advocacy for a child living with autism within the public school system requires parents to obtain a very specific set of skills. Key to success will be following four rules: Consider your child's perspective first; build a community of advocates; know your rights; and understand the classroom.
