Suicide Prevention in a Diverse Campus Community
Shadick, Richard; Akhter, Sarah
New Directions for Student Services, n141 p71-81 Spr 2013
As the college population in the United States rapidly diversifies, leaders of successful campus suicide prevention programs are recognizing the importance of targeting specific groups of students. Recent estimates from the National Center for Education Statistics indicated that in 2008 more than one-third (36.7 percent) of college students enrolled in degree-granting institutions were of differing racial, ethnic, and national backgrounds, as compared to just over one-fifth (22.5 percent) in 1990 (Aud, Fox, and KewalRamani, 2010). Students with disabilities are estimated to compose roughly 11 percent of the college population (Raue and Lewis, 2011), whereas between 2 and 5 percent of higher education students identify themselves as nonheterosexual (S. Rankin, personal communication, August 5, 2011). This chapter presents a brief overview of suicide rates among various groups of students in the United States, followed by factors that negatively affect mental health. The chapter concludes with a description of the development of a novel approach to suicide prevention for a diverse campus, as implemented at Pace University in New York City.
