Postsuicide Intervention as a Prevention Tool: Developing a Comprehensive Campus Response to Suicide and Related Risk
Cimini, M. Dolores; Rivero, Estela M.
New Directions for Student Services, n141 p83-96 Spr 2013
This chapter explores the critical role of crisis intervention and other support after a suicide has occurred as part of a comprehensive suicide prevention response within college and university campuses. The important components of postsuicide intervention campus crisis response and protocols and the identification of key stakeholders to implement these protocols are discussed. Special issues in postsuicide intervention, such as the role of social media, working with campus media, considerations associated with the planning of memorials, and self-care for responders to a student suicide, are explored. Finally, the importance of planning a coordinated and collaborative campus response prior to the onset of a campus crisis and ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of such a response are outlined.
