In response to Oregon's Teacher Standards and Practices Commission requirement that all prospective teachers document samples of their work, the Teacher Work Sample (TWS) was developed during the 1980s at Western Oregon University. The TWS was conceptualized as a method to connect meaningful teaching and learning while documenting teacher candidates' development of a systematic unit. Since the TWS is a narrative-driven document, as well as an application of theories learned in the classroom, it also supports and develops the general studies objectives. The TWS requires narrative reflections and evidence for eight teaching processes identified by research and best practice as fundamental to improving student learning, each one building upon the other. The eight processes or elements of the TWS are Contextual Factors, Learning Goals, Assessment Plan, Instructional Design, Classroom Management Plan, Instructional Decision Making, Analysis of Student Learning, and Reflection/Self-Evaluation. As with any general studies program, the purpose of the TWS is to provide students with the information, ideas, and skills needed to live a well-rounded and intellectually rewarding life. The general studies program's first three objectives are considered essential and, therefore, embedded into every course in the teacher education program. The other objectives are substantially represented and spread throughout all other courses. The education faculty at the university took these eight objectives one step further and embedded them into upper-level professional courses in the education major in order to continue the development and integration of these foundational skills begun in the first two years of general studies. A table included in this article represents the natural correlation between general studies objectives and components of the Teacher Work Sample. This article provides a description of each general studies objective and how the Teacher Work Sample supports and builds on the core competencies of the general education program.
