Much of the focus in education has shifted toward science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The growing importance of those subjects is based primarily on the projection that some countries will fall short of homegrown young adults who can meet the demands of the future job market unless educators act judiciously. But in the quest to ensure students' future employability, it's important to not lose sight of the elements of schooling that make students great human beings. Those elements can be found in areas of humanities, such as history, world languages, and the arts. To appreciate the worth of the humanities, it's important to consider a comprehensive value assessment that incorporates not only the dollar amount a student stands to earn as an adult if he or she excels in the sciences, but also the student's potential career longevity, which directly aligns with the development of emotional intelligence. How long someone sustains a career and is able to work cohesively with culturally diverse groups affects his or her earning power.
