Toward a Sustainable Society in the Mena (Middle East and North Africa) Region: Roadmap and Priorities
El-Bassiouny, Noha
Journal of Education for Sustainable Development, v6 n2 p293-294 Sep 2012
The Business and Society Research Cluster (BSRC) at the German University in Cairo, the El-Khazindar Business Research and Case Center at the American University in Cairo and Misr El-Kheir (MEK) Foundation, Egypt, hosted the region's first sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) case studies conference, entitled "Toward a Sustainable Society in the MENA Region: Roadmap and Priorities", at New Cairo City in March 2012. The attendees included representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), academia, civil society organisations, private sector, public institutions such as the National Research Center as well as other significant stakeholders. The event included panel discussions on ethical consumption; contemporary issues in the sustainable consumer society; sustainable transportation, placement and urban systems; remedies toward a sustainable society; as well as local and international multi-stakeholder perspectives on CSR and sustainability delivered by academics, corporates and NGOs. Beyond the wisdom shared, the networks created and the dialogue generated between local and international academics and practitioners, the event paved the way for the creation of pioneering interdisciplinary educational programmes, initiatives and projects in sustainability and CSR in Egypt and the MENA region.
