Love, Sex, and Partnership: The Orientations of College Students in Moscow
Borusiak, Liubov'
Russian Education and Society, v54 n8 p36-71 Aug 2012
Issues of sexuality have started to be studied quite extensively in Russia in the past few years, and the results of research have appeared in this country's scholarly literature.1 It is regularly noted, moreover, that at the present time Russian sociologists have only very preliminary, fragmentary ideas not only about the sexual behavior of contemporary Russians, including young people, but even about the perceived value of sex and the norms that are being formed or already have formed in this sphere. Some issues have been studied better, such as the time and motivation of young urbanites' sexual initiation, but most of the issues have not been studied much at all; the information is very incomplete and fragmentary. In the present stage of sociological study, preliminary conceptions are being formed concerning the actual nature of sexuality in today's Russia. Research data on sexual attitudes in Russia show that there have been significant changes since the Soviet era and that the gap between the views of men and women is beginning to shrink. At the same time, there are still strong differences in the way males and females in Russia view sex and sexuality. (Contains 6 notes.)
