The Disadvantaged as a Social and Professional Phenomenon
Bryen, Diane N.; Bartel, Nettie R.
Journal of School Psychology, 11, 4, 387-401, 73
By relegating the culturally disadvantaged to a deviant status, social and professional institutions create differential perceptions and expectations and influence their self-evaluation, academic success, and career opportunities. The transformation of deviance into incompetency has also led to formally sanctioned methods of managing deviancy. Compensatory educaion, ability grouping and special class placement maintain the position that the culturally disadvantaged are indeed deviant and incompetent. (Author/LA)
