Jianjun Wang
Grantee Submission
California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) is continuing its three-year grant, "Collaborative Capacity Building on Biodegradable Soil Sensors for Sustainable Agriculture," initiated in 2023. The project integrates research, education, and outreach/extension to advance the development and deployment of biodegradable sensors for monitoring soil moisture and nitrate concentrations, with the overarching goal of enhancing environmental protection in agriculture. The initiative also aims to strengthen partnerships with community stakeholders and foster career preparation for diverse undergraduate and graduate researchers, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented minorities and women. In its second year, the grant team has made satisfactory progress in (1) offering research and learning opportunities for diversified student populations, (2) training students in leadership preparation, (3) creating and delivering a new course, "ENGR/PHYS 4700: Biodegradable Electronics for Sustainable Agriculture," in Spring 2025, (4) preparing community workshops, collaborations, and internships, and (5) supporting community college and K-12 school outreach. This report concludes with a review of prior recommendations and introduces new strategies to further improve grant performance and impact in the third and final year.
