Making Gains in Gateway English and ESL through Dual Enrollment
Rachel Yang Zhou; Hoyun Kim; Olga Rodriguez; Laura Hill; Eric Assan; Daniel Payares-Montoya
Public Policy Institute of California
Taking college courses while in high school--known as dual enrollment (DE)--gives students greater access to core subjects like English and math. Along with legislation, in the past few years California has invested nearly $700 million to support K-12 and community college districts to expand and support dual enrollment--and to help accelerate gains among historically underserved student populations such as Latino, Black, and first-generation students. In this descriptive study, the authors explore the challenges and opportunities of using dual enrollment English and English as a Second Language (ESL) as a strategy to improve access to and success in college. It is important to note that the results show associations between participating in DE and improving student outcomes--not causal relationships
