Empower: Final Evaluation Report 2024
National Literacy Trust
The Empower programme is designed for girls who are excluded or at risk of exclusion from school. It aims to build the critical thinking skills required to spot misinformation and navigate the online world safely. The programme focuses primarily on girls and young women aged 11 to 14 as this group may be more vulnerable to messages about social acceptance and to harmful content. Developing the programme was an iterative process, beginning with a teacher steering group and leading to a pilot project which was delivered in six schools in January and February 2023. Empower was launched to a first cohort of 95 schools in April 2023 and a second cohort of 96 schools between September and December 2023. Teachers could attend live training sessions provided or watch training recordings during both cohorts. Two author events were also curated to provide students with a unique opportunity to directly engage with authors on the topic of media literacy, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the subject. To evaluate the programme, both quantitative and qualitative data was collected using surveys. The findings from the evaluation show that the programme has achieved its expected key outcomes. Students were more confident in their critical digital literacy skills and teachers reported seeing changes in their students' behaviour following the programme. Similarly, teachers reported an increase in their own understanding of media literacy in the classroom. [The Empower programme was funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) of the United Kingdom.]
