Leading to Stay: The Role of Principal Leadership in Urban Teacher Retention
Seth N. Key
Online Submission
The purpose of this study is to look at leadership styles that affect teacher retention. This literature review looks at empirical and nonempirical studies on effective leadership styles, communication, and teachers' support and how that correlates with teacher retention. This qualitative study looks at how teacher retention is affected by principal leadership. Specifically, this study is looking at teacher retention in urban schools with a focus on servant and transformational leadership. Teachers leaving education in urban schools disrupts school stability and the overall quality of education for students. Prior research indicates that there is an impact of leadership on teacher morale and turnover, but gaps remain, particularly in how leadership is perceived by teachers. This study addressed these gaps by centering teacher voices through semi-structured interviews.
