From Candidate to Classroom: Research-Based Practices for Recruiting and Hiring Highly-Effective Teachers. Overview Brief #33
John Papay; Emily Kalejs Qazilbash; Christina Claiborne
EdResearch for Action
This research brief highlights evidence-based strategies for recruiting and hiring highly effective teachers, a critical challenge for many districts facing ongoing shortages. Research emphasizes that early and open hiring processes expand applicant pools and lead to better matches between teachers and schools, improving retention and student outcomes. Strategic recruitment efforts, including partnerships with teacher preparation programs and pathways for paraeducators and substitutes, help diversify the workforce and increase teacher supply. Additionally, structured selection processes, such as demonstration lessons and standardized interviews, provide more reliable indicators of teacher effectiveness than traditional hiring methods alone. By implementing these proven practices, schools and districts can strengthen their teaching workforce, enhance instructional quality, and improve long-term student success.
