Year 3 Report: Preparation for Expanding Equitable Pathways to In-Demand STEM Careers at CSUB
Jianjun Wang
Grantee Submission
California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) is continuing its five-year grant, "An Equitable Pathway to In-Demand STEM Careers," which began in Fall 2021 to facilitate Hispanic students' degree completion and career preparation in STEM fields. In its third year, the grant team followed the original proposal to: 1. Offer effective First Year Seminars for new STEM students, 2. Provide tailored support for attending the campus career expo, 3. Host career talks to enrich external learning opportunities from guest speakers, 4. Coordinate internship and outreach conferences to strengthen program ties with industry and local school partners, 5. Create Winter, Summer, and year-round learning opportunities for undergraduates to conduct STEM research with faculty, 6. Pilot new learning channels, such as LinkedIn Learning and an Amazon Project Services course, to expand students' academic perspectives, 7. Improve the existing peer coaching model for better team functioning, 8. Organize Virtual Workshops and Engineering Day for community engagement, 9. Showcase student project presentations at various public platforms, and 10. Pursue facility improvements and staff recruitment. The evaluation design is guided by a well-established Triple A model--Activity, Artifact, and Association--as a framework to assess these accomplishments, detailing the integrated and effective approaches to STEM career pathway expansion. The report concludes with three recommendations to strengthen the program's "servingness" in the fourth year.
