2022-2023 Overview of M-DCPS' Academic Performance. Information Capsule. Volume 2304
Rosalyn Rodriguez; Vanessa Gonzalez Hernandez
Research Services, Miami-Dade County Public Schools
This capsule is meant to address the most frequently asked questions about the academic performance of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) during the 2022-2023 school year. M-DCPS received a District Performance Grade of "A" this academic year, and no traditional MDCPS school received a grade of "F". However, the percentage of schools within the M-DCPS system that earned a School Performance Grade of "A" decreased compared to the previous year. The new Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) English Language Arts (ELA) Reading (grades 3-10) and Mathematics (grades 3-8) was administered for the first time in 2022-2023. The results showed that the percentage of students who scored on grade level in ELA Reading was consistent across all grades. Approximately 51-53% of students scored on grade level, while the percentage of students who scored on grade level on the FAST Mathematics varied from 47-61%. Moreover, students took the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T) End-of-Course (EOC) assessments in Algebra 1 and Geometry. These assessments showed that the percentage of students scoring on grade level was higher in grades 7 to 9 compared to grades 10 to 12. Other assessments included in the calculation of school grades remained the same as in previous years, including the Science Assessment, Biology, Civics, and U.S. History EOCs. The number of students who attained Achievement Levels 3-5 in the Statewide Science Assessment for grades 5 and 8 increased during the 2022-2023 academic year compared to the previous year. In addition, the EOC results showed an increase in the number of students who scored within Achievement Levels 3-5 in Biology, a decrease in Civics, and no change in U.S. History. Florida also employed the FAST STAR assessment in the primary grade levels (K-2) to assess students' early literacy, reading, and mathematics skills. This assessment helps teachers understand students' personalized learning needs and plan accordingly. While the results of this test are not used to calculate school grades, they provide valuable insight into the performance of our youngest students. This capsule provides an overview of academic performance during the 2022-2023 school year.
