Building a Relationship: Laying the Groundwork for Online Interviews. Sage Research Methods: Doing Research Online
Adam H. Fleenor
Sage Research Methods Cases
In this case study I reflect on challenges and successes of building relationships with native people before and during my dissertation research. Obstacles encountered include switching from in person recruiting and interviews to online strategies because of the COVID-19 pandemic. I review strategies in building resilience into the research process that are based on reciprocity and reflexivity (or research positionality). This case study also required flexibility in research design in an effort to be more inclusive of a participant who did not want to be recorded. Researchers will learn ways to strengthen their research techniques and think outside the box to meet both academic and ethical standards when working with culturally unique populations.
